Network Engineers are responsible for using information technology programs to develop computer networks used in the workplace. The size and scope of the network depends on the company and the work it does, as does the number of engineers needed on the network team. The types of data networks Network Engineers may build includes local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), intranets and extranets. In addition to engineering networks, these professionals must also analyze the building’s hardware and wiring as well as business operations to determine where communications are strongest and build a network accordingly. Network Engineers must also present their findings and plans to management and liaise with other company engineers and IT staff. It is a role that is likely to stay in demand, as being able to connect to a reliable network is key to the daily operations of many companies. It is key for Network Engineering professionals to stay up to date on emerging technologies, have a background in computer science, programming or business, possess strong analytical skills and communicate adeptly.
